The Hershberg Diet Recipe Contest

The Hershberg Diet is looking to integrate the culinary talents of dispersed generations, skill levels, and cultures to create the first peer produced cookbook co-created by the health conscious for the health conscious! Whether you're a stay at home mom with an armamentarium of kid friendly recipes, an experienced chef looking for an opportunity to showcase your masterpieces, a bubbie, grandma, nonna, yaya, or nan whose finally decided to reveal your secret recipes, or someone who has a fantastic recipe that other healthy eaters would love to get their hands on, this contest is for you.

Prize:
One grand prize award of $1,000 will be awarded to the overall best recipe and there will be 6 runner-up awards of $200 each for the best recipe in each category.

Rules:

  1. The categories for recipe submissions are as follows:
    • Breakfasts
    • Soups, Salads and Vegetable Side Dishes
    • Entrees (Fish and seafood, chicken, and meat)
    • Pastas
    • Desserts
    • Child approved/fun recipes

  2. You may submit as many recipes as you like.

  3. Your recipe must conform to either Phase One or Phase Two of the diet. While I encourage you to pick up a copy of the book to best understand the theories behind the diet, if you don't have a copy you can still enter using the simple guidelines below:

    Phase I Recipes:
    If you are creating a recipe for Phase I, you may use any of these listed Phase I foods. Please try to limit the quantity of fats used however to less than 3 tbsp per recipe.

    Phase II Recipes:
    A Phase II recipe can have unlimited Phase I foods but cannot have more than 3 portion equivalents of the Phase II ingredients listed per recipe.

    So, for example, you could use 1 cup of whole wheat pasta (this is 2 portion equivalents), 1 handful of pine nuts (1 portion equivalent) for a total of three portion equivalents of Phase II ingredients. The rest of the ingredients would therefore have to be Phase I foods. I have provided another example following the list of Phase II ingredients.

  4. Recipes must be original. Recipes must not have been previously published in the same or nearly the same form. By submitting a recipe(s), you affirm that to the best of your knowledge, it is your original work and unpublished or it is an existing recipe that features four or more significant changes. Contestants are solely responsible for complying with any applicable copyright restrictions, and the The Hershberg Diet assumes no obligations in that regard. By participating, each entrant accepts these rules and agrees to be bound by the decisions of the judges, which will be final.

  5. Participants and winners understand and agree that recipe entries (including photographs, if any) become the exclusive property of the The Hershberg Diet upon submission and cannot be returned. All intellectual property rights in recipes and photographs submitted by participants are transferred to The Hershberg Diet upon submission and shall be owned thereafter by The Hershberg Diet. Participants and winners further agree that entries may be used, edited, modified or expanded upon by The Hershberg Diet or other contest sponsors in any way those organizations deem appropriate, without compensation to participants/winners.

  6. Winners grant permission to The Hershberg Diet for use of their name, photograph and/or likeness, for publicity or advertising purposes and similar promotions, and for winner's list, without compensation.

  7. Recipes not meeting all requirements will be disqualified.

  8. Winners will be solely responsible for any personal tax liability on the prize awards.

  9. Recipes will be judged on taste, originality, appearance and ease of preparation, as well as the incorporation of The Hershberg Diet tips and tricks.
To Enter:
Original recipes should be clearly written or typed and must be submitted along with the contestant's name, complete address, and phone number as well as email address and fax number if available. Each recipe must be submitted on a separate sheet or emailed separately. Emails are preferred although faxed submissions will also be accepted.

Entries must include: name of recipe, category type, phase I or II recipe, number of servings, list of ingredients with specific quantities in standard Canadian or U.S measurements, and complete preparation directions including baking/cooking time and temperature.

Beginning January 15, 2008, submit an original recipe via email or online using the contact page. Or, fax the recipe to The Hershberg Diet Recipe Contest at 416-849-5551.

Contest ends May 15, 2008. There is no limit to the number of recipes submitted and it is possible for the same person to win for several different categories. The Hershberg Diet is not responsible for entries that are lost or mishandled. Please note that all recipes once submitted become the property of The Hershberg Diet, can be reproduced and/or modified for later use, and may appear in an upcoming peer-produced cookbook as aforementioned.

Winners will be selected on or about the week of August 1, 2008 and be notified by telephone or email.
